Laser Quest, 6pm Tuesday, Dec 17th

Just a reminder that this Tues., Dec. 17th at 6:00 we will be meeting at Laser Quest for a fun evening. The Bears won this opportunity by selling the most total popcorn as a den, within the pack. Go Bears!!! Time is 6:00-7:30 on Tues. No money is needed for playing.

I would like to ask though if your child could bring a $2-$5 donation that I will collect, as I would like our den to be able to purchase some shoes for children in another country. In stead of a goody bag, I thought that this would be a good contribution for our children to be a part of........and I would encourage them to use their own money as well.

I got the idea from the sermon series we are learning about at church called Advent Conspiracy. I saw that we could buy a child a pair of shoes for as little as $5 dollars. So if you feel like you'd like to be a part of this, please send your child with an envelope on Tues.that they can give to me and I will follow through with the donation.

Thanks,
Diane Marzigliano

December 17 Den Meeting - Laser Tag!!

Tuesday, December 17 at 6pm
Laser Tag, 644 E. Rand Road
(near Chili's & Olive Garden at Palatine/Rand Rds)

Because our den sold the most popcorn out of the entire pack, our leadership is rewarding the boys with a trip to Laser Tag!!  Please leave a comment or send Sharon a note whether or not your son will be able to make it.

Once we firm up the schedule for the evening, I'll post an end time.  You can drop off your scout for this event if you'd like.

UPDATE December 7 - Caroling at the Lutheran Home

December 7 -845am

The Cub Scouts will be headed to the Lutheran Home to sing songs for the residents.

I thought this was a "drop off" event, but, in fact, parents are invited to join as well.  Might help the boys with their singing!

You can meet at St. Peter (Highland Side) between 830 and 845am to shuttle to the Lutheran Home to reduce the number of parking needed over there (construction is limiting their lot these days).  Or, park on the streets South of Lutheran Home and meet the pack in the lobby a few minutes before 9am.

December 6 Pack Meeting - our den is hosting!

December 6 at 7:00pm at the St. Peter Cafeteria.

Please, take note of the following details for the evening:
  • Arrive at 6:45 to help set up and practice the flags.
  • Bring 2 dozen home-baked cookies. In order to meet our "What's Cooking" requirement, please have your scout assist in baking 2 dozen cookies and bring them to share at the pack meeting. They don't have to be Christmassy - all cookies tastes great!

We will have a full night!  We are hoping to have the Arlington Heights Police K-9 Unit come and give us a demonstration that night.  Also, we will be doing a Christmas craft for the boys to bring to residents at the Lutheran Home the next day during caroling.

Police Station Visit

What a great night at the Arlington Heights Police Station!  Officer Doug Hajek gave us a wonderful tour, shared some great stories and covered quite a few of our required topics.

Tonight, we completed 7b, e and f.  Officer Doug gave each child 2 finger print kits. Please help your child complete these (7a) and store them in a safe place in case they are needed in an emergency.  Please take a few moments to review your own home security (7c) and the safe homes in your neighborhood to which they can run/call for help (7d).

The boys also completed 11a-d.  One of the things that Officer Doug stressed is to practice escape routes at home (11e) so that in the event of an emergency, your children will more easily be able to get to safety.  Just talking about it isn’t enough.    Please complete 11e and 11g at home.

To Dos

  • For those that attended, kindly let me know when you’ve completed 7a, c and d as well as 11e and g.
  • For those that were not able to attend, please let me know when you’ve completed an alternate achievement in Country and Family sections (see the list of achievements for the ones that we are already planning on doing to complete the section).

Upcoming Events

God & Me – Four Tuesdays in November, 4-5pm: Pastor Roggow will be leading the scouts in their Emblems of Faith Achievement (#2) to earn their God & Me pin and their religious emblems of faith square knot badge.  This is an optional achievement for our den, however, please note, it cannot be earned after this year.   Next year, the boys will have an opportunity to earn their God & Family pin.  I understand that this can be difficult, but Pastor Grainer has asked that parents also attend the meetings.  Please let me know by October 28 if your child will be attending. A workbook will be needed for each scout which can be bought at the Scout Shop. The Pack does not pick up the cost of the workbooks used in the class, so that cost will need to be paid by the families.

Pack Meeting : Raingutter Regatta – November 8 or 9?: Start working on your boat if you haven’t already.  If you weren’t at the last pack meeting and need your boat, let me know and I can send one home from school, have it available in the St.P Cub Scout mailbox or just arrange a time for your to pick it up from my house.  This event requires very little woodworking skills and is very fun for the kids - Don’t miss it!!

Camp Lakota Day Trip – November 16, 10am-5pm :  Head out to Lakota for a day! Cub Scouts earn your BB & Archery belt-loops and pins! All participants can also enjoy geo-caching, hiking, and all of Lakota. Please bring water and a sack lunch. Climbing will be open weather permitting.  Register Now! $10pp  Please contact Emily Rinaldi (Lakota Director) with questions.  847-824-6877

Overnight at Sci Tech Museum in Aurora – February 7 :  An "Overnight at SciTech Museum" is a special opportunity to explore SciTech Museum after dark.  Our pack will experience a whole night full of Scitastic Fun that is sure to be memorable!  $45 child, $25 adult

Blue and Gold Banquet – February 24: A very meaningful afternoon for the scouts to celebrate their achievements with their families.

Achievement Plan 2013-2014

Achievements
The achievements for Bears are set up a bit differently than what we had last year.  There is a list of achievements in the book broken out by God, Country, Family and Self.  We must complete a certain number of achievements within each section, but are not required to complete them all.  The list below is a detail of what Diane and I discussed as likely achievements for our den.  This may change during the year, but for the most part we’ve got a plan. ;-)  If your child is not able to make it to one of the meetings, there are other achievements within each section they can complete at home which will count toward their rank.  Just let me know what they decide to do.  We are hoping to keep our meetings to one Monday night at month from 6-730p.   As availability of resources determines the night, we appreciate your flexibility.

God (do one)
We felt this an appropriate section to be completed at home.  You have the choice to complete Ach#1 which is a discussion about ways to worship or Ach#2 which Emblems of Faith (aka God & Me) hosted by Pastor Grainer on Tuesdays in November.  Either one is up to you.
**Kindly let me know what you choose and when it is complete.

Country (do three):
#3 What Makes America Special – completed at the Arlington Heights Historical Society DONE
#5 Sharing your world with Wildlife – hoping to complete this by making a birdfeeder at Home Depot in late winter
#7 Law Enforcement is a Big Job – Oct 21 field trip to the Arlington Heights Police Department

Family (do four):
#9 What’s Cooking – several of the requirements were completed at the campout. If your child arrived late to the campout, please complete at home and let me know when it’s done.
9b – the snack DONE
9e – make trail food DONE
9g – cook something outdoors (s’mores) DONE

9c : HOME Unfortunately, we were planning on the boys helping to prepare the dinner (9c – pg.83) on Saturday at the campout, but it sounds like the dad’s did that.  Therefore, your child will need to help prepare one part of any meal at home.
**Kindly let me know when it is complete.

#10 Family Fun – HOME  This requirement is specifically one to be done with the family.  10a is to go on a day trip or evening out with your family and 10b is to have a family fun night at home.  If your family is going pumpkin picking this year or out to a corn maze, that counts as 10a!  if your family goes to the St. Peter Fall Festival at the end of October – counts!
**Kindly let me know what you choose and when it is complete.

#11 Be Ready – discussion on what to do in various emergency situations.  We are hoping this will be completed during our police station visit on Oct 21.

#12 Family Outdoor Adventures – This one was covered simply by going on the campout! Camping, hiking and picnicking.  DONE!

Self (do four)
#17 Information Please
17a: HOME  With an adult in your family, choose and watch a TV show together
**Kindly let me know what you choose and when it is complete
17b: Play a game of charades at a den meeting  (den meeting tbd)
17e: write a letter to a company that makes something you use (den meeting tbd)
17f: talk to a family member about how getting or giving facts fits into his or her job (prior to above mentioned den meeting)

#18 Jot it down  (possible – not confirmed)
#19 Shavings and Chips – (possible – not confirmed) If there is a parent or family member that is handy with a pocket knife, we’d love the boys to do this one.  Once they complete the achievement, they’ll be “authorized” to carry a pocketknife to designated Cub Scout functions (with your ok!).

#20 Sawdust & Nails – this was completed at Home Depot last week on October 7.  DONE
If you were not there,  **Kindly let me know what you choose and when it is complete

#21 Build a model
21a: HOME  Participation in making their Raingutter Regatta boat or Pinewood Derby Car
21g: HOME While building your kit, please discuss with your child the Resourcefulness questions listed on page 160 of your book.

One of these:
21e: For those that went to the Historical Society field trip in September, we saw a model of the Arl Hts Train Station there when we went on the tour of the home (21e).
21b: If you did not make it to the Historical society field trip, simply make a display stand for your boat (hint: out of the box!) and you’ll be all set (21b).

#22 Tying it all up – We are hoping to have our Den Chief, Nathan, teach the boys different rope tying techniques (den meeting tbd)

#24 Be a Leader – Although we have several great options for the Self section of achievements, we felt that reviewing the qualities of a leader and helping them practice this is an important part of being a Scout. Please take time to discuss these requirements with your child. We will also do so during an upcoming meeting.
