Tying it Up is a Wrap!

Today's meeting was very informative and well run by Nathan, Torian and Haakon.  The boys earned their Tying it Up Achievement in it's entirety.  In addition to whipping a rope and tossing to a target, they boys learned half-hitch, slip-knot, bowline, square knot and sheet bend.  Here is a great site that shows a bunch of knots as well as some animations.

Diane is holding onto the ropes we used today so that the boys can practice together during upcoming meetings.   On the way home from the meeting, Charlie and I stopped at True Value Hardware store and picked up a rope for him to use to practice. They'll cut it to length for you for 39 cents/foot - we got 3 feet, but I would recommend 4 feet if you'd like to do the bowline knot.

1. Please be sure to take a look at the Evite for the Blue & Gold and let us know how many people in your family will be coming.  
2. Let me know what achievements you've completed at home.  (your scout could be 75% done with earning his rank if he's up to date!). 
3. If you haven't turned in your money for the SciTech sleepover, please contact Tim Koclainis ASAP.  

We'll let you know as soon as we have the date confirmed for the Wildlife Achievement at Home Depot in February.

"Tying It All Up" - January 26, 1-230pm

On Sunday, January 26 (1:00-2:30pm), our Den Chief, Nathan as well as his fellow Boy Scouts,
Torian and Haakon, will be leading the boys in their "Tying It All Up" Achievement (#22).  During this meeting, the scouts will complete the following five requirements:

• Whip the ends of a rope.
• Tie a square knot, bowline, sheet bend, two half hitches, and slip knot. Tell how each knot is used.
• Learn how to keep a rope from tangling.
• Coil a rope. Throw it, hitting a 2-foot square marker 20 feet away.
• Learn a magic rope trick.
• Make your own rope.

REMINDER Pinewood Derby - January 11, 8 AM, Practice Runs - January 10, 6 PM

Friday night January 10th

6:00 pm – 7:15 pm: Track & Room set up

7:15 pm – 8:00 pm: Car check, weigh-in, track testing

-      Friday night is optional; however, it will be your only chance to ensure that your car meets the weight requirements and performs on the track prior to the race.

Saturday morning January 11th

7:40 am – 8:00 am: Car Check-in

-      All cars must be check-in and weighed by 8:00 am to participate.

8:00 am – 8:15 am: Continental breakfast / Bracket Set-up

8:15 am: Opening Flag ceremony and the races

Helpful Hints

This year’s theme is “NASCAR”, but this doesn’t mean you have to make your car to this theme.  Any and all designs are welcome! Time to show your creativity!

Awards will be presented for “Speed” for each rank, “Overall Speed”, and “Design”.  Top finishers have a chance of competing in the Scouts district event in April. 

Of course we’ll also have the Pack 37 traditional “Turtle” award for the slowest car!

There will be an activity table for siblings and scouts, adult and sibling races as well! Win or lose, there will be fun and medals for all scouts!
